Appearing as track 11 on the Radio 1 in concert album Steve Hillage Live in Concert, produced by Chris Lycett and Jeff Griffin and originally released in 1992. This cheerful little ditty is even better than the wonderful studio version which was on Steve Hillage's 1978 solo album 'Green'. Presented here with a sui...

It's a wonder what Ralph Vaughan Williams did. He created an orchestral piece for strings. The melody on which it is based was the third of nine melodies that Tallis contributed to a metrical psalter compiled by Archbishop Matthew Parker.

You might be wondering about the separation of the orchestra into foreground and background sections. RVW was primarily an organist. In many large pipe organs, there is a division of pipes called the Echo or Ethereal division, which is located some distance from the primary organ, sometimes even at the opposite end of the church. This division was designed to provide a kind of stereo or surround sound effect. This is the effect RVW is trying to get by using the 2nd "Shadow" orchestra.

From the moment I heard it, it became part of me. Its music I cannot live without, and can play in my memory like an absolute recording. This is one of the best renditions of it in recent times. Others may disagree - but to me there is an element both of the depths of space, as well as an element of crystallized whale-song to it.

After having heard many performances of this masterpiece, I cannot help believing that this is the ultimate performance, not only because it is so magnificently played at the very same venue where the composer himself conducted and first performed it more than a century before this recording, but also because it so obviously reflects the pains and tortures of Psalm 2 upon which Thomas Tallis based his immortal melody ... Let us not forget, that Tallis was a religious outsider by the time he wrote this music, respected as a musician but at the same time outcast as a Roman Catholic at a time when Anglicisim was paving its way as the mainstream religion in England ... With great sensitivity Ralph Vaughan Williams, although not confessing to any religion himself, has reinterpreted Psalm 2 in such a way, that one can feel the oppression of the devout Catholic that Tallis was at a time when his Religion was barely tolerated ... ruclips.net/video/8bPFAKxb9IQ/видео.html

Arguably the best theme music ever composed. Loneliness and dark, drizzly, empty streets. Captures the feeling and mood of Frank Marker perfectly. Quite an intricate piece to score and play. Props to Bob Sharples and what I can only assume are session musicians. Giving Edwin Astley a run for the money here.

The first time i heard this, i was unable to speak for what seemed an eternity. And as a Londoner of Irish extraction, speaking has never been a problem. I couldn't believe that a mere human could write something so elemental, so magisterial. I really thought the Creator had spoken to me.

This superb performance, led by the late Sir Andrew Davis, puts me in mind of "Fantasia," except that the real setting is superior to using animation. I hasten to add that if someone were to pair the music with animation I would certainly watch it. "Fantasia" significantly impacted how I often hear music. It's the closest I can get to having that reportedly rare condition of synesthesia.

All versions of this sound pedestrian compared to the version on GREEN. Steve always sounds good but his drum and bass players are too stiff. Also most versions I've heard are too damn fast.. They are rushing through it. The GREEN version is the one...for ME.

Why this music reminds me of beatification, of Jesus, of Buddha, of Mohammed, Moses... Take your pick, walking with a kindly smile through the Earth, i do not know. Vaughan Williams gift was to shine a light on the spark of God that is in everything. How he did that i do not know. I sound terribly religious, but I'm really not at all. It's this music that causes these feelings.
